Building a site in a weekend for Mountain Rescue
Blogged by Kamila Miara on Saturday, 6 January 2010
A group of Drupallers have got together to work for a higher cause – to update, simplify and revamp the website of Langdale/Ambleside Mountain Rescue. All keen, all volunteers, all in one weekend; I’ll keep you updated on what’s happening here in the Langdale/Ambleside Mountain Rescue premises:
The project starts with a meeting in the Mountain Rescue Premises and with a lot of coffee.
Nick from Mountain Rescue introduces us to the Mountain Rescue world and tells us a bit about the incidents that have recently happened, some of them are quite funny, some are hair-raising…one thing for sure: the Mountain Rescue volunteers clearly love the job…
Their existing site has been in use for many years and needs an update. As Mountain Rescue relies on donations, and all staff are volunteers, it seemed clear that The Drupal Rescue Team needs to be formed consisting solely from volunteers to get the job done.
To tackle the task, five teams have been formed: Incident Data Team, Content Team, Network Support Team, Theming and Project Management Team, in literally minutes all task teams are up and running.
The main aims for the website are to make it fun and simple, by:
* Organising it into six sections instead of the existing 39 (!)
* Adding new features
* Making the Incident date easier to update and read
* Correcting existing problems (e.g. large pictures downloading very slowly)
* Making it more appealing to the page visitors
* Making it super easy to donate to Mountain Rescue!
I will keep you updated on the progress over the course of the weekend (provided the internet connection allows...as we've had some issues with it...).
